Frequently Asked QuestionsNewsFAQsBlogsRules

Q. What is d20 Advanced?

A. d20 Advanced is a fully-customizeable toolbox RPG based on the d20 System. It allows creation of character appropriate for almost all genres of play from different time periods or power level, and features a variety of optional rules to increase or decrease the complexity of gameplay. The guiding principle of the system is to produce a simple and unified but robust system that can be developed further into different and interesting genres built on the same system with minimal tweaking and absolutely zero "black boxes". The guts of the system are stripped bare and gamers of all sorts are encouraged to get their hands dirty using this toolbox to build all manner of different styles of games.

Q. Are you really using point-buy for character creation? I'm not sure if I like that.

A. d20 Advanced has a point-buy system at its core, with the intent of providing not just players the opportunity to create any sort of character they can imagine, but also to provide GMs and designers a strong framework with which to mold the game to any genre or world they wish. d20 Advanced includes rules for recreating traditional, archetypal classes for players in the form of PC Templates. Whichever method the group prefers is possible with d20 Advanced.

Q. How come d20 Advanced seems to be more focused on modern or future games? I mean, it has rules for cars and guns.

A. As a toolbox system, d20 Advanced is meant to be able to handle all sorts of games. The skills and equipment are intended to be useable across many genres of gameplay, and there areguidelines for creating or rebranding rules . And since creating new pieces of equipment largely follows the same basic framework as creating characters does, it's easy to create new gear that's more appropriate for your game.

Q. Wait. d20 Advanced only uses d20s? You'll pry my d4s and my d10s from my cold, dead fingers!

A. The decision to have the game revolving entirely around the use of the central mechanic of d20 + Modifier vs. DC led to the game using the d20 for task resolution exclusively. By unifying all the task resolution mechanics into a better-unified whole, it makes the gameplay faster and more approachable by new gamers. The decision to use a d20 exclusively was in no way informed by all those times I stepped on a stray d4. Nope. Not at all.
