Excerpts: Pyramid of Shadows

There are two new excerpts up at Wizards. First is a series of several PDFs (why it’s not just one is beyond me) that preview H3 Pyramid of Shadows, an adventure for character levels 7-10.

The first PDF previews the adventure synopsis (BBEG wants out of prison), provide a couple of adventure hooks (discover a map, dream vision, crazy dude (who provides a map), and ye olde wanted poster).

The second details an artifact (yeah!) - a talking head a la Bob from the Dresden Files.

The third, fourth and fifth PDF files provide a preview of three entire encounters (2 pages each), maps and all.

So what’s new about this preview? NO ART. Yep, not a single piece of artwork in the previews outside of the maps. Technically, there is a low-res piece of artwork of the pyramid amidst the jungle on the website. Not exactly inspiring.

I suspect that the separation of the preview into different files has to do with the fact that they are non-sequential pages from the adventure.

It’s a trivial task to combine them into one file. Not a big deal, just annoying.

It’s not hard, no, but it is an extra step. A batch upload to the website is probably easier.

Besides, there’s bound to be people out there that would have complained about the page numbers being “wrong” if they were all in the same file.

My main complaint is that all these previews continue to be pre-print proofs with artwork removed and cut marks and other publishing stuff on them. I’d much prefer a more finished look.

For all those who defended 4e with the, “Hasbro is a corporation, they have a right to as much of my money as they like,” argument*, this must come as a rude awakening: What does a corporation give away for free? Crap no one would ever pay for.

*Not that I’m too terribly interested in the 3.5/4e argument, but this aspect of it always seemed silly to me--from both sides, really. What’s the counterargument? Everything should be free? We can just as easily play games with our own rules? Oh, hey, maybe that’s not so silly after all . . .
