Today’s behind the wall article is from Dragon and is a playtest article, giving those who have subscribed a chance to test out, and provide feedback on, material which is slated for release in Martial Power 2 next year.
In this case, the material for playtesting is Combat Style feats. Functioning as a kind of middle ground between the Arena Fighting feats (Dragon 368) and the Weapon Mastery Feats (Dragon 368, and more in this issue in the Assassin article), Combat Style feats are a series of two feats that allow Martial characters that use some kinds of weapons to further distinguish themselves from others who use the same weapons.
There are 8 different styles presented in the Playtest:
- Black Hood Style (for those using two-handed axes)
- Desert Moon Sword Style (for those using high crit heavy blades)
- Leafrunner Style (for those using light ranged waepons)
- Moradin’s Forge Style (for those using the traditional dwarven weapons)
- Ninth Legion Style (for those using picks and spears)
- Partisan Polearm Style (for those using most polearms)
- Reaving Axe Style (for those using one-handed axes)
- Steel Vanguard Style (for those using two-handed heavy blades)
Each starts with a feat which augments the use of some at-will powers when the character is wielding the required type of weapon (like an Arena Fighting feat). The second feat further enhances the abilities of the character wielding the required type of weapon, but these enhancements apply all the time. Unlike Weapon Mastery feats, however, these paired feats aren’t considered Multiclass feats, which means that characters could take feats from more than one Combat Style. Thus an individual who likes halbreds (a two-handed polearm axe) could take the Black Hood, Moradin’s Forge, and Partisan Polelarm Style feats. There is a proviso, however, in that you can’t apply the at-will augments from more than one feat to any particular use of a power. Thus fighters or warlords with Black Hood and Moradin’s Forge Style feats can’t use both on furious smash or sure strike. Presumably this proviso applies to the Arena Fighting at-will augments too, but the article doesn’t mention them, so for the moment our hypothetical characters could use Grudge Style with Black Hood or Moradin’s Forge Style. My guess is that some of the playtest feedback will result in a clarification on this situation before Martial Power 2 sees print.
Mostly I like the Combat Style feats, but find myself wanting to see some of the more classical weapon combinations supported. There’s no combat style for a sword-and-board fighter, for instance. Hopefully that’s just a result of this being unfinished playtest material rather than final product. Still, the material is good and a nice boon for Martial characters.
