Sean K. Reynolds Joins Paizo

In a bit of non-D&D news, developer Sean K. Reynolds has signed on with Erik Mona at Paizo to work on the new Pathfinder RPG. Reynolds is best known for his work on the 3rd Edition Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, with numerous credits across the FR books. DragonAvenue member Lune interviewed Reynolds which was published here in June of last year.

Reynolds appeared to love 3E when it was around, as is evidenced by his blog, his articles, and his bulletin board, and is understandably skeptical about 4E. He posted as much on his blog, so it really doesn’t come as much of a surprise to me to hear that he is going to continue developing material for a system he helped design. That said, his presence at Paizo makes me ten times more likely to actually purchase a Paizo product. I’ve thought highly of his work since I first started playing 3rd Edition.

This is a good move for Paizo.

Interesting. I really do hope Paizo continues to be successful. They kicked (Gibbering Mouther Ate Your Word!) with Dungeon and Dragon magazines and I am still lamenting the fact that they aren’t in print.

That said, I’m skeptical about their ability to remain viable for too long. Wizards has a bigger marketing engine and will make it hard for 3e publishers to compete. Cheers to Paizo for bucking the system and providing some great products for 3e. (secretly hoping they publish stuff for 4e someday)

Not to rain on Paizo’s parade, but I dislike Reynolds and his design philosophy. His whole attitude towards 4e has been that of a petulant child, whining and upset that he wasn’t in on it.

And I consider his lack of involvement a good thing. I read a post from him recently where he talks about how he liked the confirmation roll for crits in 3.5 and implied it was his brainchild, and then he ranted that its gone in 4e.

The confirmation roll was stupid and flat out crappy game design. It took something enjoyable away from players who rolled a natural 20 when they failed the confirmation roll, and it was an extra roll adding to an already bloated combat system.

If this sort of bad game design is what he brings to Pathfinder, then my interest wanes further.

I would not own up to that one - I remember the DM that made us roll the confirmation roll a critical hit..... i think someone took him down from the top of the house eventually - probably when he finally chewed through his gag.

Jokes aside it was the worst idea - yet another dice roll and took away the great entertainment to get q critical on the big scary monster.

SR hasn’t brought anything useful to the RPG table in his entire career that I know of. It could be his inlet to TSR/WoTC was he used to be their web guy.

He’s always had this attitude and yet his work hasn’t backed it up.

Of course, this is all in my humble opinion.
