I printed off this character way back when I first got my 4th Edition stuff, my friend played it through all of Kobold Hall and I’m embarrassed to say that I’m just now figuring out that it’s broken- or at least seems to be to me.

First- the ability scores seem SCREWED up. I don’t think they used the Standard Array, but if they rolled them, they rolled badly. Am I wrong?

Second- why Ray of Frost as the Dilletante Power? I’m thinking Twin Strike (it would work with eldritch blast). Any thoughts?

Am I missing anything else?

Hello everyone,
As I said in my topic in the general forum I am new here and to D&D in general and have my books on the way which should be here in a few days. But while I wait I am trying to read the forums and pick up as much as I can.
So I figured i would like to have a general idea of what class/race i might like to try when i get the books. I have read some FR books before, and some other Fantasy Fiction novels (i have been a fan ever since i was little and had no idea what D&D was) and i think i would like to try a Ranger first since i have always thought they were cool, maybe elven(though dragonborn does seem interesting with the breath attacks and such even if it does eat up some feats.)
I was wondering if anyone could give me any tips, such as pros/cons of being an archer or dual-wielding, or maybe even pros/cons of a ranger and some different races to use for it like the two mentioned above. Anything someone can tell me will be a big help, thanks in advance.

Does anyone else find it odd that the Rogue powers all restrict your weapon selection? Surely lack of proficiency is enough to balance out the powers?

The one that most concerns me is the ranged weapons. You must have a crossbow or sling. One of the elf races gets free proficiency with bows (short and long i believe) but because of the wording of the powers you cannot use a short-bow. I see nothing that would imbalance this usage of a bow? What if I want to play a multi-class ranger/rogue who is an archer; must I use a crossbow?

The same idea applies to something light light hammers vs light blades. I suppose this make more sense intuitively, but still makes little since from a balance perspective.

Granted this is simple to house-rule but my group would like to try things using the rules as written for a while. Does anyone see a mechanical reason for these restrictions?

Okay, my last thread did not go at all in the direction I wanted. After a short break, I see why. The subject and intent was not really fit for a debate. Really, what I was after, in my roundabout, nonsequential way, was to see how people make characters and what goes on in their heads when they are making them.

Still, I am not one to give up so easily. Screw up once, try again a different way. So, instead, I propose a contest to create the most interesting characters. The winner gains the satisfaction of knowing he made a most interesting character.

Rules: Characters must have a rough background and each selection of feats, powers, etc. must be justified with a short explanation of why it was chosen. Skills can be justified individually or in groups.
Characters must be between the levels of 6 and 10.

Judgement: When we have enough characters, I will choose between three to six. Characters will be chosen according to my whimsical nature and I will state why I chose them.
After that, I honestly haven’t a clue. I don’t much care about the winner, as I really just want to see the characters. If people are really interested in having a grand winner, pester the administrators into making a poll or something. On second thought, don’t pester the administrators; that’s a very bad idea.

Format: Below are the original two characters from my earlier post for a sample. These will not be included as entries, as it would be unfair to expect anyone to make characters half as cool as mine (ha ha!). This is about as detailed as I’ll require for characters, but if you want to be more detailed, feel free.
Have fun.

What I had in mind was a dreamworld kingdom high up in the mountains called Avia. Their cities are built on the peaks of Kamo Mountain and on the floating chunks of land that orbit them, and they fly between their settlements on giant eagles. The king is sick - dying in fact - but still alive, albeit bedridden. In his state, he cannot rule propperly, so the kingdom is run by his son, with the aid of his nephew. The prince is a brash, hot-headed individual, prone to rash actions and hasty decisions, while his cousin is more level-headed, so the two balance each other and make for a good ruling pair.

First Character
Prince Hawk Avia III, CG Human Fighter 8.
CG because he’s hot-headed, quick to act, but still good-natured.

Rolled following abilities (added 2 points to Dex for lvl 8); S: 16, D: 16, C: 16, I: 14, W: 12, Ch: 9.

Feats: Being he is a hot-headed fighter type, I chose the following feats
Mounted Combat: All rulers have to be able to fight on the backs of the giant eagles.
Power Attack: He’s heavy handed in his attacks, but as a result, his strikes are sometimes a little wild.
Cleave: His attacks are strong enough to plow through one opponent and into another.
WPN Focus, Specialization and G Focus in Longsword: He had dedicated himself to the study of this weapon and is very skilled.
Improved Sunder: A disarmed opponent is easily dealt with and he’s strong enough to break his enemies weapons if he goes all out.
Improved Initiative and Quick Draw: Being hot-headed, he’s quick to draw his sword and start a fight. More than that, he believes in making the first strike, so he specialized in getting into the fray quickly.

Skill: Fighter skills are limited, I give anyone who says so that much.
Climb, Jump, and Ride maxed out. Handle Animal at half max and Spot maxed. These seemed natural choices for a mountain kingdom.

Equipment: Elven Chainmail, Mithril Heavy Sheild (chosen because they are light, which is needed when flying on the back of an eagle), Flametongue (hot-headed, so a fire-weapon seemed appropriate), Bracers of armor +2 (a little extra protection and not a lot of weight).

Mount: Eostre, a giant eagle, statistically identical to what’s in the MM.

Second Character

Prince Lark Avia, LG Half-Elf Paladin 10
LG because he’s a very organized person. Half-elf because he’s not actually the duke’s real son, just a child he took in because he didn’t have an heir.

Rolled following abilities (+1 to dex, +1 to wis for lvl 10); S: 12, D: 15, C: 13, I: 16, W: 18, Ch: 17. After rolling the abilities, I basically placed them opposite Prince Hawk.

Patron Deity: Inti, god of the sun and justice.

Feats: Given his thoughtful approach to life, I chose the following feats.
Experties: He’s a cautious and defensive fighter. He’ll often sacrifice a good hit to ensure propper defense.
Improved Disarm: Non-violent by nature, he prefers nonlethal means of subduing foes, so he often tries to disarm them without hurting them whenever possible.
Mounted Combat: Again, giant eagle.
Leadership: Although he’s technically not the crowned prince, he’s better suited to leading than his cousin.

Skills: Reflecting his position as advisor and ambassador for the kingdom of Avia, he has the following skills.
K(Nobility and Religion), Diplomacy, Sense Motive maxed out. Ride and Handle Animal at half max.

Typical Prepared Spells: Again, reflecting his non-violent personality.
1st: Cure Light Wounds x2; 2nd: Sheild Other, Delay Poison.

Equipment: Celestial Armor, Holy Avenger (both gained on a paladin quest earlier in his life), Ring of Air Command (a gift from his father).

Paladin Special Mount: Jenevir, a giant eagle with paladin mount special abilities of a paladin equal to level 7.

Hello everyone, here is one of my favorite character i played during the last year. My Kobold Sorcerer 6/element Servant(fire) 3 named Krabok, using the rules in Race of the Dragon for the level substitution and CM/dragon magic/RotD/CA for draconic feats and some metamagic feat from Sandstorm and PH2 and you get the picture.

Krabok
His very tied to his Brass dragon ancestor and he talk and know alot! His not very witsy and often get himself in trouble. He his a follower of Kossuth and believe that his world that run toward a second great destruction(we use a setting based on WoT with some modification) need to be purge by fire. He was a childish savant, always too curious but very charming.

I dont remember his stats (my DM keep the character sheet at his place) but i kinda remember his feats. I know he had a high Dex(around 16), Int(18) and Cha(20), with low Str(8-9), mid Con(around 14) and mid Wis(around 12).

Skills: Knowledge Arcane and Plane Maxed(DM gave me Plane to me as class skill due to background, I was raised by a Sage, he found my egg and took care of me), Spellcraft Maxed, Concentration Maxed, Bluff Maxed, Gather Information Maxed(draconic heritage).

Draconic Heritage(from class substitution lev 1)(RotD), Draconic power(RotD), Widen Spell, Searing spell(SS), Energy Substitution(fire)(CA), Fiery Spell(SS, gain through a personal quest for a Fire Elemental Lord). I was aiming at getting Draconic Presence or Draconic Vigor as next feat.

His main spells was Scorching ray(3/day with class substitution lev 4), Lesser fire orb, Fire wings(oriental adventure), Firebrand(FR campaign setting), Krabok breath(a fire breath lev 3) and Curse of the Elemental Lord(Dragon Magic).

The way i see him is as a Wizard taking mostly fire spells and was thinking making a paragon class for the elmental servant. The only problem is all those draconic feat. I saw the wyrmpriest kobold have a breath and a enery attack related to his kind of dragon. Maybe i could do something like that. Maybe create some feat kobold only that would make them closer to their draconic ancestors, maybe some kind of breath like the dragonborn.

Your ideas are welcome

When i get home i will post the first works on that paragon class. But i need ideas for that very draconic aspect i was giving him.

Okay, here is my cheif complaint with 4E. The method of character generation looks really boring and lacking in depth. How does one take a base idea for a character and develope it into a full character?

Some of you may say I’m being argumentative. Yeah, that about sums it up.
This is an invitation to a friendly debate about the the character generation process of 3E and 4E and which one is better. Note the word friendly: if you approach this with the idea that it’s a challange, it will be a lot of fun. If you take it as a personal attack, it will devolve into a childish squabble (also, I will hate you). Let’s be reasonable adults here (I put down my sword, you put down your rock and we’ll kill each other like civilized people).

Here is a pair of 3E characters to demonstrate what I mean, after which I will drop the gauntlet.

Paladin Special Mount: Jenevir, a giant eagle with paladin mount special abilities of a paladin equal to level 7.

Okay, now you’ll notice that I made each choice based on the style of the character. However, I did not have any of this in mind when I began. After looking over each feat/skill/item possible for the character, I picked out the ones that seemed most fitting. In the end, this helped flesh out the details of each character’s personality.

Okay 4E nuts, do the same. Take a basic character idea and, using only the abilities you can pick and choose from the 4E rules, fully flesh out the character. If you can make a characters this fleshed out from just the abilities of the 4E core rulebooks, you will have taken the major ground for my biggest argument against the system and I will be forced to concede the potential of 4E to be a good system.
‘Cause I can’t see how you would make characters like these in 4E. Not at all.

Now I didn’t actually bend any rules with these characters, each uses only possibilities from the 3E core rulebooks, but I will allow you to tweak a few rules and still call it a valid argument, because a little rule-bending is a good thing, even in a good system, but it can’t be outlandish changes from the core.

Hello and Good Day,

I play Dungeons and Dragons on the weekend with some close friends and family and we just started using 4th Edition and they’ve been reading the books non-stop to see if they can get ahead of the game and be the best of the group..

I was wondering if anybody knew of a few under-handed setups or character configurations that are unnaturally strong.

Currently the group is at level 7, so make or suggest a character build to that level.

Thanks,

Hey everyone,

(Edit: Gah, this got long… sorry. If you want, you can skip to the last part where I say what I’d like some advice on.)

yes, it’s me. The one with the 3.0/3.5-mix DM. We had a nice little goodbye-session for one of our players who is going to Taiwan to work there and (sadly) got into a little discussion on grappling mages.

Background:
Haste is done 3.0, most classes and many other spells are done 3.5.
Mage Armor and Shield count for touch AC.
Greater Spell Focus does not exist, but Spell Focus grants a +2 to the DC.
The DM loves wizards and favors them quite a bit.

Characters:
Rogue/Fighter/homebrew swashbuckler PrC/shadow creature (only ‘half of template’)
Bard 10
Wizard 5 (conjuration and enchantment specialist) / homebrew PrC 4 (a combination of Red Wizard and a PrC with spell pool)
Wizard 5 (illusionist spec) / something 3
Fighter / Paladin / Cleric / 1/2-dragon (only the first 2 savage progression levels)
Ranger 6 / Wizard or Sorcerer 1 / Arcane Archer 1 or 2

Situation:
Our six characters (only three players were actually there) followed a renegade wizard in the underdark and his ‘fellowship’ of giants/ogres/bugbears/goblins. We caught up with them at some point - the ‘brutes’ were keeping watch outside a house (which later turned out to be Leomund’s Secure Shelter. Our conjurer sent a cloudkill down the tunnel and into the guarding creatures while we approached the scene, partially invisible. During the fight, our bard charmed the giant (had 2 fighter levels), my rogue killed the ogre (+3 fighter +3 rogue levels) off quickly and we soon faced the wizard at the door of his shelter. Our wizard luckily recognized the spell and managed to dispel the secure shelter while the bard cast dispel magic twice and rolled very high, dispelling the 6 or 7 buffs the wizard had on (remember that with the old version of haste, one can cast 2 spells per round).
An improved invisible bugbear fighter/rogue (CR 12 supposedly) started hacking into our half-dragon and others at this point and my character joined the fray and stood right next to the wizard. The wizard took a 5’ step and cast two spells - my character’s turn (not hasted btw). He took a 5’ step as well and went for a grapple. AoO from wizard missed, first grapple succeeded and with his iterative attack he went for a pin - and also succeeded.

Well, our DM did not agree to what the rules say at all. In his mind, no high level wizard (was CR 13 even though he only could cast 6th level spells) should be able to taken down this easily (I rolled well, was lucky btw). From his point of view, grappling is the best alternative in almost all circumstances vs. mages - and that destroyed the cinematic effect of their appearance and role as well as being too powerful against them and slowing things down to much.
He held a staff in his hand and because he would not agree with what the rules said, he let the wizard use two different wands (magic missile + fireball) that round, heh. Furthermore, when a creature managed to hit my character, he had to roll another opposed grapple check to see if he could hold on and did not manage to hold on when the fireball hit (ie: a wrestler lets go if he’s hurt was the DM’s argument). In the end we managed to succeed and we postponed the discussion until after the session - only sensible, heh.

Well, I tried to tell him that not being able to do anything against a high level mage except beat him to death is not balanced at all and that a grapple isn’t an automatic success. Furthermore, if his large lackeys had still been up, the giant could easily have joined and broken the grapple - but they weren’t. Imo, any character who stands more or less alone against a group of 5 (the illusionist was kept mostly out of the fight) should not stand a chance.

The Question(s):
a) What spells/abilities/options/items does a wizard have to evade/escape/break a grapple?
b) It’s a balance-issue in the end imo, but also an issue of style/preference. Our DM wants long-ish fights against bosses - and sometimes those are wizards. If the boss is taken out of the equation too easily, then that’s not to his liking. He doesn’t want to have us grapple his wizards the whole time - how do you see this whole issue/situation, etc.?
