If you’ve played 4e using the community compiled rules, what did you think?

I played it for the first time on Sunday and I really enjoyed it.  The mechanics are simpler, although the options seem greater.  I think character creation might actually take longer, but actually playing the game seems like it will be easier.

You’re a slacker!

I’ve played about four times now, though every time I seem to start we end the session before we get to the good parts :/

Very fun, I’m glad I preordered.

Shhh...my common sense is tingling.

I have yet to play 4e, but I have DMed it 4 times now (including the PbP I am running now).  I did a fairly in depth review of my first game (found here: http://www.dragonavenue.com/forums/viewthread/584/ ) but I will be more than happy to reiterate my feelings here (being the 4e fan boy I am smile)

From a DMing perspective I think that encounters are much easier to set up.  The XP system (where you add the monsters XP together until it matches the players lvls x100) is sooo much easier than the ECL/CR/CL system. I can throw encounters together in no time.

I am also DMing my first dragon encounter right now on the boards. So far he has the PCs on the ropes, Dragons seem to be as powerful now without being nearly as complex.

All in all I am loving 4e.  The rest of my group likes it so much that we have taken a hiatus until 4e comes out.  We still get together, but w are doing other stuff besides playing DnD.

I really don’t get it yet.  Mechanically, it can’t be that much better, can it?

Well, I don’t have the full rules yet. But I will say that I have enjoyed playing the level 1 4e pre-gens much more than I have ever enjoyed playing level 1 for 3e.

Mostly that’s because level 1 in 4e plays a lot like level 3 in 3e. You aren’t as fragile and have more options. I actually really enjoy 3e from about level 3 to about level 14 or so. The so-called sweet spot.

The main reason I dislike 3e at higher levels is the proliferation of save-or-lose spells and mechanics. Whether its Save or Die, or simply Save and sit out the rest of the combat. I also hate level drain with a passion.

Since 4e has removed these things, those are major plusses in my book.

Speaking from a DMing standpoint it is a LOT simpler.  Whether this is a good thing or a bad is a matter of personal opinion, but I know that I can make adventures A LOT faster now than I could in 3e.  Also since encounters are designed for multiple monsters it helps with bigger groups since 3e was (IMO) centered more around 1 big monster, so larger groups eithre killed it easily or had to face a monster that did too much damage or was to hard to hit, etc.

I can not adequately explain the difference the best I can say is get a few people together and have a test session. All the stuff you need should be in m 1st post here:

http://www.dragonavenue.com/forums/viewthread/584/

and/or here:

Well, I haven’t played with the community-created rules, but I have played (and DMed) with the actual rules and, while I can’t say much (NDAed), I can say I vastly prefer 4th to 3rd edition. Plays faster, funner, and simpler.

Any one got a few quintillion joules worth of energy lying around?  I want to accelerate myself to a significant fraction of the speed of light so that the 50 some odd days until 4e will pass quicker.

Perhaps the only precept taught me by Grandfather Wills that I have honored all my adult life is that profanity and obscenity entitle people who don’t want unpleasant information to close their eyes and ears to you.

You’ll need some sort of zero-friction (either plasma or atomically propelled) vehicle in order to attain those speeds, even WITH all that red bull.

Pay 0: Sacrifice Devastator, search your library for a card named Doombot. Put Doombot into play. You win the game.

You’re the physicist.  I was hoping you’d be the one supplying the method of time acceleration.

I dmed a game with the pregens and the bootleg stuff that has JK’s name on it from Enworld.

It was faster and fun but the system looks like it will favor good “builds”.  Power tree’s seem to be a focus that i don’t dig without a good way to put a good roleplay on it.  It does feel like mmorpg and it leaves a creepy feeling afterwards.

I’ll get the books and I am sure I will like it.

You mean moreso than in 3E?  Think about how much traffic the Character Development and Optimization threads got both on 3rdedition.org and Wizards, let alone ENWorld and others.  Think about Biff--that guy is the example of “good builds.”

It does feel like mmorpg and it leaves a creepy feeling afterwards.

I’d like to hear why you get that feeling.  Not that I doubt you, but I want to know what about it makes you feel like you’ve been on an MMO.

One roundhouse kick, coming right up.  I’ll try to be gentle.

ENWorld has bootleg stuff with my name on it? I must be more out of the loop than I thought.

Now the first rule of time travel is, we do not talk about time travel. The second rule of time travel is, we DO NOT talk about time travel.

That said, I’m looking forward to 4e crunch. What’s been revealed of fluff however, is awful.

Now I’m ALWAYS smiling!
