Hello, sorry to post this here but I didn’t really know were to and though this would be the best place to get some answers.  I have been wanting to play a bit more DND in my spare time and thought I would try the play by posts.  I noticed you had one on this site but didn’t see any rules of joining a game or how to start a game of my own.  I didn’t want to just jump into a game and brake it up with my random posts so I thought I would ask.

Any help would be great.
Thanks

Hey there andrewk, I’m actually the DM of the 4E game we have going on the forums here so I figure I’d know the answers to your questions first hand.  As far as starting one, it is quite easy, I just posted a topic in the general forum saying I would like to start at PbP.  Took me a few weeks to get some folks and a few details ironed out but then I posted my topics in the 4E forum and that’s that.

Now one thing you might have a problem with is that if you don’t want to DM you might have a bit of trouble finding someone who will.  Many people who frequent this (and others) forum are people that don’t have a ton of free time, and as I am learning (this is my first game of D&D ever and I am DM rasberry ) that is does take up a good amount of time.  I enjoy it though so it all works out for me.

About joining the game there I hate to say it but, I have eight already “under my wing” (I mean that with humor and affection if you read this guys wink ) and it is kind of a task keeping up with all of them, not to mention NPC’s, going through combat or some skill check.  And I already have some things planned ahead that go with the eight theme.

On the other hand, if someone were to drop, not want to continue on after this adventure, etc. I don’t think anyone would mind if you took the place of that person to keep the game going.  But I’ll let you know if that happens, so not really something to worry about now.

If you do decide to DM, I have learned some nice little tricks and just good, easy, organizing skills for keeping track of all the PC’s and NPC’s backgrounds, character sheets, and other stats.  And certainly not one to hoard knowledge I would be happy to share it all with you or anyone else who wants, just ask.

So let me summarize incase that was a bit too much reading:
-Post topic looking for players
-Actually find said players (easier said than done)
-Work out details with players (who will play what, style of adventure, etc etc
-Decide on DM
-Said DM posts Characters, OOC, and IC topics in 4E game area
-Enjoy grin
-Ask here on the forums if you have any questions about anything, everyone is very helpful

You know, I might start a PbP at some point. Probably for 5 players.
I’d also like to play more d&d (especially 4e) and since I am playing in one game (Chad’s game) I might DM another. I am still trying to come up with some rough idea of an adventure.

Stay tuned....

I am tuned.

This site had a big pbp base at one time, but to help the old hosting service out alot of them moved to:
online-roleplaying.com

There are a lot of pbp on there to join if you don’t want to dm one.  it is a little harder to get a forum there than here.  There you have to post a topic find players then ask for a forum for your game from one of the moderators(though it is still pretty easy).

I could always go for some more D&D and PbP allows you to take your time and not be on a set schedule for things.  I would love to get a view point of the game as a player, ha ha my first D&D game is as a DM rasberry Especially since I have had a ranger made since 2 days after I got my books (took me a little time to read through them all and get a feel for the rules grin )

And being a player isn’t near as demanding as a DM, I could handle another game and keep it straight if it was just as a player.  Looks like you might have found a possible game here andrewk, what luck.  cheese

Of course, no pressure to you Rothe to actually start one.  I feel sure everyone here understands the strains of life and how having a big time commitment like D&D can affect things.  If it happens too, but if it doesn’t, that’s cool too.  We all get it

I’d love to get in on another pbp here for 4e (was in that 4e trial run). Would give me an excuse to buy the books at least LOL

So, I dediced to give it a try.
I will DM a play by post game on these forums.
It will be a 4e game with max of 6 characters.

I will make a thread about it in the gaming area.

Since some people on this thread wanted in, I will give you priority.
Please inform here if you are still interested.

Priority is for the following people:

Chad
Frostnumenor
andrewk
Talae
darklink
Eardiamn

Anyone else wanting in, please post here on in the (future) game thread.

I hope you guys are patient… I have to learn to make maps that work and to post them up.
I was hoping to start the game in forgotten realms, but since I don’t have those books with me on my trip
(a long trip...), the game will be in the default points-of-light setting, I will have to come up with something.
So far, looks like the adventure is for level 10+ characters.

Feel free to inform a few classes you might want to play, so we can try and see what kind of party could work.
I might have a few house rules, but mostly it will be a core 4e game. I might allow some extra books if I get my hands on them later.

Feel free to tinker with a 10th level character. That is where the game will start.
I don’t have much restrictions, except I don’t much like the blood mage paragon path (too many potentially broken rules concerning its powers), so I urge to try something else if you go wizard. PHB races are ok, and some others might be ok too (monster manual). I expect the characters to be mostly good in intentions - alignment is not important, but unaligned or good is fine.

Eardianm, once you have some idea what class(es) you want to play, post here so the others will know what options are free.

I don’t have much time to type up stuff before sunday, so don’t hold your breath guys. I can tailor the adventure a bit to the party that you will make, so it is not overly important that it is optimized.
I would still like it if we could avoid duplicated classes.

How do you feel about Dragon/Dungeon/Other Wizards online material? I don’t have any specifics in mind (yet), but thought I’d ask.

I will most likely allow stuff from dragon and so on, I want to ok it item by item though.

The starlock stuff is something that I think might be a bit overpowered though. Some of the feats seemed outright broken when I first saw them, but maybe they have some errata or I misunderstood something. If you are wanting some of that stuff, you should post them here so I think about it.
