Hey there andrewk, I’m actually the DM of the 4E game we have going on the forums here so I figure I’d know the answers to your questions first hand. As far as starting one, it is quite easy, I just posted a topic in the general forum saying I would like to start at PbP. Took me a few weeks to get some folks and a few details ironed out but then I posted my topics in the 4E forum and that’s that.
Now one thing you might have a problem with is that if you don’t want to DM you might have a bit of trouble finding someone who will. Many people who frequent this (and others) forum are people that don’t have a ton of free time, and as I am learning (this is my first game of D&D ever and I am DM
) that is does take up a good amount of time. I enjoy it though so it all works out for me.
About joining the game there I hate to say it but, I have eight already “under my wing” (I mean that with humor and affection if you read this guys
) and it is kind of a task keeping up with all of them, not to mention NPC’s, going through combat or some skill check. And I already have some things planned ahead that go with the eight theme.
On the other hand, if someone were to drop, not want to continue on after this adventure, etc. I don’t think anyone would mind if you took the place of that person to keep the game going. But I’ll let you know if that happens, so not really something to worry about now.
If you do decide to DM, I have learned some nice little tricks and just good, easy, organizing skills for keeping track of all the PC’s and NPC’s backgrounds, character sheets, and other stats. And certainly not one to hoard knowledge I would be happy to share it all with you or anyone else who wants, just ask.
So let me summarize incase that was a bit too much reading:
-Post topic looking for players
-Actually find said players (easier said than done)
-Work out details with players (who will play what, style of adventure, etc etc
-Decide on DM
-Said DM posts Characters, OOC, and IC topics in 4E game area
-Enjoy
-Ask here on the forums if you have any questions about anything, everyone is very helpful
