This is something I plan to implement at the table this weekend… It is a sound mixer that plays out multiple streams at the same time, so imagine:

Music (battle music, action music)
Swords clashing sound effects
Monster Grunts sound effects
Dungeon Atmosphere sound effects
Human grunts sound effects

You have the perfect background music and effects while you are play out an encounter.

Every audio track is loopable, and you can control them independently of each other, so if you get tired of one, turn it off without affecting the others, or bring in another one while the other ones are playing…

mixere.sourceforge.net

It is free open source software.  The only thing you have to do is find the audio tracks for it.  If you have movie soundtracks, then there you go, rip and go.  I have a D&D “Music for Roleplaying” CD I picked up some time ago that’s pretty good.

A good source of sound effects is the MP3 sound effects binaries newsgroup on Usenet.  They have on there swords, horses, field nature sounds, dungeon atmosphere, monsters, EVERYTHING!

I have nothing to do with the program, but it was so cool I thought I’d share.

I downloaded Audacity about a year ago and have been using that to cut and tailor sound effects and music tracks.  I had intended to have a musical background with fighting sounds for each round of combat in my PBP, but other priorities shifted that way to the back of the pack.

I have NWN, Baldur’s Gate Iⅈ, Icewind Dale Iⅈ, and Pools of Radiance (as well as Menzoberranzan and Eye of the Beholder I-III) and have found various utilities to rip out the sound effects and music from those games.  That said, I’ve been cropping music from movies like Conan and LotR because they’re better for that.

I have Audacity.
Give this thing a try, you won’t go back to Audacity.

You can even use Audacity to make your MP3, and then enter that MP3 into Mixere.

It is bad-(Gibbering Mouther Ate Your Word!).  It says it’s meant for live events.  I consider DMing an RPG a live event.
