I will be participating in the illusion of Democracy later today.  Get out and vote or start an insurrection or something.

No illusion, here.  The USA makes no pretenses of being a democracy. [/rant lest the thread get locked.]

[Edit: That being said I did vote.  It took me longer to actually vote than it did to get my ballot which was a nice surprise considering how crazy the polls were supposed to be.]

I voted via absentee ballot Monday of last week.  Second time registering (I moved to Wisconsin early last year) first time voting.

I didn’t vote. Not because of not living in USA (I didn’t vote here either), but because I don’t believe in democracy. Seeing as majority of people all over the world is quite stupid, I don’t think it’s healthy to let the masses have a say. That includes me, what do I know of running a country? Why would I be given anything that resembles a responsibility? Of course, giving up what little one has to say in one’s country’s affairs over some vaguely philosophical conception is kinda stupid in and of itself, but that’s exactly what I’m talking about.

No. Someone who knows what s/he’s doing and has near absolute power (aka a benevolent dictator) is the way to go. Problem is finding one of those in the first place (and then a way to remove them when they’re no longer benevolent, which’s probably inevitable)…

[/rant] as well.

See, you answer your own dilemma. People all over are not only stupid but selfish. And, hard as that may be for some people to accept, that ALSO includes people in a position to rule. (Well those tend to be more selfish than stupid, but they can be pretty incompetent sometimes.) So, while putting the power in the hands of the unwashed masses sounds like a bad idea, the principle is actually one of breaking monopoly. The more you spread decision-making around, the less likely it is that power will be monopolized by those who will use it badly. And, make no mistakes - give absolute power to anyone, no matter how “enlightened” they seem, and you’ll be sorry a couple years down the road. Well, unless you’re happy to accept living in whatever conditions they put you in and swallowing whatever drivel the government-sponsored media (a common fixture in absolutist regimes) feeds you, which unfortunately would make you like a large portion of the population.

In other words, as Winston Churchill said (not sure on exact wording), “Democracy is the worst system of government in the world, save for all others.” Yes, people do stupid things and sometimes vote stupidly. But the alternative is far worse.

The problem with a benevolent dictator is there really hard to get rid of when they stop being benevolent.
Do you purpose electing the dictator every four years like they do on Naboo in Star Wars.

I keep intending to start planing ahead but I keep putting it off.

I had no idea.

According to my sources the world will end on February 14, 2016.  That’s when the special swimsuit edition of the Mayan calendar ends.

That’d still give a say to the average joe. What would work (but won’t be implemented any time soon) is to make absolute power come with death sentence. Infect the “leader for life” with some terminal disease that’s gonna kill him before all that power gets to his head. Long as we have a steady supply of selfless people well suited to ruling, all will be golden…

This is wandering into a political discussion, albeit a theoretical one, so I’m going to lock it now.

Perhaps the only precept taught me by Grandfather Wills that I have honored all my adult life is that profanity and obscenity entitle people who don’t want unpleasant information to close their eyes and ears to you.

Donate rice by improving your vocabulary.

Because you don’t have anything better to do in January in Maine.
