I was wondering if anyone else here has a subscription to Gametap and would like to buddy up for some multiplayer.  My screen name is the same as it is here, as it is in most places.  You can PM me or just post your screen name here and I’ll add you on.

For those of you not familiar with Gametap it is a downloadable game subscription service with games as old as Pong to being put on the service the day they hit store shelves.

Gametap comes in two flavors, green and gold.  Green is free.  You can see a list of their free games here.  However before you can play any green games you have to sit through an 30 second advertisement to go gold.  After the game starts though it plays normally without adds or interruptions.  Also the free games eventually leave the free list.  Their removal date is listed on the free game page.

Gold costs either $10/month, $25/3 months or $83.40/year, although you can get a starter deal and get the first month for $1 or the first year for $60.  Gametap Gold currently had 984 games all of which can be seen here.  New games are added each Thursday.

I have Green but I haven’t played in a few weeks.  Too busy with school work and subbing right now. I’ll look you up next time I login.  I think my username is Mercutio (not sure because I seem to remember it might have already been taken).

Awesome.  If you can find some time before the end of the month we could be rocking some Final Fight co-op.

actually - my username is mountc because Mercutio was taken.  Just played Hitman for a bit.  I love it, but it’s frustrating as hell.  I can’t get past the Lee Hong Assassination.  I’m most annoyed that you don’t get any save spots.  It’s annoying that I have to start all over again each time I die.  I almost threw my keyboard, so I knew it was time to stop playing…

So umm...you get to download the full games for free? Do they time out?

They don’t time out (at least as far as I can see), but the free subscription is pretty limited.  The Gold version actually has a lot of games (even games I couldn’t run on my PC like newer Lara Croft and Hitman2 and 3).  You download them and when you want to play them, you actually start Gametap and access the downloaded games through the Gametap UI.  It’s pretty sweet.  I had a 30 day Gold access because my wife drinks a lot of Coke (the My Coke Rewards promotion).  It’s since dropped to Green since I can’t really afford Gametap on top of all my other expenses.

They don’t time out as in you only get to play the game for a certain number of hours or you can only play through the first couple levels of a game.  It’s not a demo, it’s temporarily free.

For Example Hitman is scheduled to be on the free list until November 1st.  After then it will no longer be available and some other game will take it’s place.  While it’s on the free list you have access to the whole game.  You could sit down and play the game from start to finish.

Sorry for the double post, but just wanted to mention that Gametap got it’s 1000th game today.  The game is Civilization 4.

Some other noteworthy games that recently came to the service are

Sid Meier’s Pirates!
Typing of the Dead
Clive Barker’s Jericho
Sam and Max: Ice Station Santa (first episode of season 2)

Also as a promotion for the upcoming Hitman movie, all Hitman games are on the Green (free) level service.

Thread necromancy!

I got a Grimm coffee mug from winning one of Gametap’s Grimm trivia contests.

And a shot of the black side with hot coffee in it to reveal the Grimmized image.

Very cool.  I beat the first episode as a free member about 2 weeks ago.  What kind of trivia was required to win that mug?  Pretty sweet, IMHO.

The trivia is questions about the game.  Here’s the first two rounds of trivia with their answers bolded.  I won round 2, round 3 is going to happen sometime later.  I competed in the Monday Leaderboard Tournaments for both these game so I’ve defiantly played them enough to know the answers.

Round 1: American McGee’s Grimm: Puss in Boots
Question 1: How did the young man come to own such a remarkable cat?

The cat was his sole inheritance from his father.
He found the cat in the woods.
The young man prayed for an answer to his problem and the cat appeared.

Question 2: How did the cat defeat the ogre of the castle?

He challenged him to a sword duel and bested him.
He tricked the ogre into magically becoming a mouse and promptly ate him.
He convinced the ogre he should be living in a cave.

Question 3: In the first level of Puss in Boots, what do the cabbages turn into when Grimm converts them?

Human heads
Dog poo
Piles of vomit

Round 2: American McGee’s Grimm: The Girl Without Hands
Question 1: In the original tale, what did the miller think he was promising to the devil behind the mill, which turned out to be his daughter?

His horse
His wife
His apple tree

Question 2: From what material did the king have the girl’s new hands made?

Wood
Silver
Gold

Question 3: What did the queen name her child?

Sorrowful
Pitiful
Mournful
