Let’s assume “existing literary character”, otherwise the answer won’t mean much to everyone else.
Going with the Song of Ice and Fire series I’ve been reading recently, I’d have to say Tyrion. Although Lucifer from the eponymous comics series is a good bet too, I guess that can be considered fantasy as well. (Or maybe I just want to promote the Lucifer comics, which I’ve been really loving )

I just had to jump in and say I own every issue except the first 8. They are all bagged and boarded and taped shut, sitting in my comic boxes. I read each issue carefully, making sure to keep fingerprints off as much as I could. That was one of my favorite comic books ever.
On topic - I can’t pick a favorite fantasy character. I’ve simply read too many at too many points in my life that, short of a gun-to-my-head, life-or-death situation, I just couldn’t pick. My first thought that popped into my head, though, was John Carter.

Well if everyone gave some background for the character and a reason why they liked them so much I think it would be pretty cool. I like hearing what others have come up with in their games.
In keeping with the current direction of the discussion, my first favorite fantasy characters were Peter Pevensie from the Chronicles of Narnia, followed by Taran from the Chronicles of Prydain. Later on I really liked Elric of Melnibone, and even loved Drizzt Do’Urden circa The Dark Elf Trilogy.
Using Cameron’s example, if someone were to put a gun to my head these days and ask that question I might be hard pressed to answer before they got bored and pulled the trigger. I might have to say Corwin from the Chronicles of Amber.
Strange thing is I have no favorite character from my favorite fantasy book of all time The Lord of the Rings.
I would say Raven or One-Eye from The Chronicles of the Black Company, or maybe Goblin. Actually Goblin and One-Eye actually need to go together, they have a long going feud and when they get going at each other it is pretty hilarious.
He has been in more than 10 novels in the forgotten realms series
That’s not enough reason to be a favorite character.
That said, Drizzt used to be my favorite too, but it was for tangible reasons. As teenagers I think we all identify with him--the outcast with “bad” parents, the guy/girl struggling for identity and acceptance in a totally alien world to that of childhood. At 30, the Drizzt essays now seem trite and preachy, but at 14/15 they actually meant something.
(Not to mention that he kicks (Gibbering Mouther Ate Your Word!) and Salvatore’s action sequences are among the best in D&D novels!)
All this said, of the Salvatore characters, Jarlaxle rose to be my favorite shortly after his debut in Exile.
I agree. I used to like Drizzt, but after some of the later books I have not been interested at all.
I suspect a lot of it is because the character is rather superpowered and repeating the same “cool” fighting moves all over again is getting old. Also, I am getting older and I can identify with what Cam said about the series.
