M.E.R.P.S. baby

According to my sources the world will end on February 14, 2016.  That’s when the special swimsuit edition of the Mayan calendar ends.

Started playing basic D&D at age 11 with some friends I met in Junior High.  Thats what got me hooked.  I played AD&D after that with other people’s books that I borrowed and tried to find people that were interested in it.  Picked up some RPG books from a hobby store that my parents took me to a couple times.  Marvel Super Heroes and Star Wars d6, mostly and later Battletech.  Found a great group that I played with at a local comic/game store that used to exist in the small town I was from called Bookhaven.  I got to know the owner who played in the same game and am still good friends with him today.

Eventually I moved on and bought my own AD&D 2nd edition books and still have all the old complete books and skills and powers books.  I ran many of my own games and played in even more.  I played a lot of other systems along the way.  TMNT, Shadowrun (still haven’t played in a good game), Cthulhu and way more than I can probably list here.  I was also into other geek things like M:TG...who am I kidding?  I still am.  I play M:TG on Sundays with some friends often.  Into various comic books, etc.  I also was a fan of Lone Wolf.  There was a very similar series where you played a more wizard like character and I can’t remember it’s name but I read those too.  I even had (I think I still have somewhere) a single player D&D game with cards and dungeon tiles.  It was odd yet somewhat fun.

I got into 3.x naturally it was the evolution I was waiting for.  I had long since stopped using THAC0 in favor of an AC system that worked like the rest of the system did.  Saves always frusterated me as well.  Basically all the things I liked about 3.x are a checklist of why I switched.  It really has been the system that I always wanted to play.  4th has me rather nervous as many of the changes I have heard about are a change in the wrong direction.  Plus I do not think anything is “broke” in 3.x like it was in 2nd edition that needed fixing so I would think this would be a good opportunity for them to make a backwards compatible system (much like the 3.0 -> 3.5 conversion).  But I digest (currently some steak which was rather tasty).

By the way, I think that Talae’s story was the most touching.  Its like having a hand in the raising of someone else’s kid and you get to see how your influence affected them. wink Yer so cute, Talae.  hehe

Oh, and I agree with JK.  There is a lot of stuff making me feel old about gaming now.  For instance, I was in my local game store the other day and someone asked me how long I have been playing M:TG and I said since Beta.  They didn’t even believe me until I showed them some Beta cards and then they thought I was a relic of some forlorn age.  While there I also partook in a conversation about the different itterations of Green Lantern when I mentioned Alan Scott and got a resounding “Who?!” in unity.  I proceeded to yell at the poor youngsters for making me feel ancient.  ...little brats.  lol

Started at 17 with 3e and some friends.  had to start dming when they went to college(they were juniors and seniors in college).

From there, I have played 3e/3.5e, Shadowrun 3e, one GURPS campaign, d20Modern(alot of that as my friend only wants to dm that system/setting), Conan, and The Attack of the Squirrels or something like that.

edit: Forgot Serenity RPG in that list.

My very first RPG experience was Marvel Superheroes. We played one session, the GM gave us pre-made characters, and we only had d6s, so he kinda just winged it. It was a sort of boring experience, but luckily the GM introduced me to the other gamers at my high school and soon after I was playing D&D. And have been for the 15+ years since. Wow. I just realized I’ve been gaming for half on my life. Where’d all the time go? Oh, yeah. Dungeon crawls and villain slaying…

Started with DnD in the late 70’s, and I’ve played a hella lot of stuff in the meantime.

my first experience for rpgs was at a catholic summer camp, we had to hide out and play games on our free time. we played tmnt and dnd first edition. I was really into tmnt because it was more like the comic tmnt than that bastardization that came on tv

knowing with out doing is still not knowing

I, too, started with the Fighting Fantasy books (note that the Steve Jackson from those books is not the Steve Jackson from the game company we know; though it doesn’t help that the US SJ also wrote a few FF books as well! Check it on Wikipedia)

But my first real RPG was Palladium which was fun. Then Rifts (which was short lived), then TMNT, then Paranoia (aw yeah), then 3.0, 3.5, Lord of the Rings and now 4e.

Boy, I’ve done more RPing than I thought I did.

DnD was the first RPG I played as far as in person, live, real people.  The first roleplaying game I played was either wizardry or bards tale.

I started with the purple D&D box back in 6th grade homeroom. The Caves of Chaos ruled! By high school, we moved on to AD&D and played just about all of the modules including Temple of Elemental Evil and Scourge of the Slavelords. We tried RuneQuest, Top Secret, GURPS, Gamma World, and Star Frontiers. Some of the group even tried Boot Hill. I never had a group for 3/3.5 and only ever played a couple of times online. I am excited to try 4e, it reminds me alot of the old days. Anyone looking for a role-player wink

I started with Choose Your Own Adventure, then played a bit of D&D 1ed that my cousin parent gave us. Then i got into AD&D got almost all the books and played a lot of M:tG but stop a few collection past Iceage, i think it was at Mirage, but i still have my old cards laying in a big box somewhere. Then in college i discovered White Wolf games(vampire, Werewolf, Mage) and also LARP vampire. Then tryed Star Wars with the d6 system. I also tryed rift and played several games.

Then 3rd ed D&D came out :D i been playing for quite awhile and also a Spycraft game we still play when we get into the mood smile Then we shift to 3.5 D&D and finaly we are getting into 4th edition and we like it very much, we love the more tactical part of it, its almost like playing a FF Tactic game :D

I also played some Shadowrun and some other games but i dont remember all their names hehe

When I was 14 I read a newspaper article about some college kids who played a game called “Dungeons and Dragons” who got lost in steam tunnels under the college while “trying to play the game for real”. There was a brief description of the game and I was like “WOW! I want to try that!”

Sometime later I found a purple box in a clearance bin along with two TSR minigames “SAGA” and “Revolt on Antares”. I DM’d my first game with my Dad, two brothers, and my cousin- I took them to the Keep on the Borderlands.

I played AD&D off and on over the years but I became extremely turned off by powergamers.

I tried 3.5 a few years ago, but again walked away when it was overrun by powergamers. I’d just started a new campaign using some 3.0 books somebody gave me, some storebought adventures, and my two best friends (who are certainly not powergamers). I got so excited by 4th when it came out that I scrapped the whole thing and I’m forcing my friends to start all over again this Saturday when I begin my 4th Ed campaign.

Anyone looking for a role-player wink

Can you make it to The Dragonslayer’s Stronghold in St Albans West Virginia this coming Saturday afternoon? I’ve got room for at least 3 more players (no powergamers please cheese )
