Gary Gygax, the creator of Dungeons and Dragons, has passed away…

Now I’m ALWAYS smiling!

Yeah, I also post about this on the front page - Jim added a photo and a link to Gygax’s wikipedia entry.

I owe a lot to Gary most of my friends going back to Junior high I met through Dungeons and Dragons.
Hell before 7th grade I had few friends and was constantly picked on. But the game allowed
me to gather with a group friends and really develop and grow a thick skin. If not for D&D
I would never have had a reason to look forward to school.

Hell in the second half of my senior year of high school I had no academic reason to show up.
I had already graduated and my classes were unnecessary.
In the second half of my senior year of high school I only showed up to school to to see my D&D buddies
(most of whom were a year younger). I had already graduated and even a few teachers
asked why I still showed up. Most seniors left the day they had officially graduated.

So I hang my head at the loss of a great man, who’s imagination sparked a game that has greatly shaped
my life.

I keep intending to start planing ahead but I keep putting it off.

Good night sweet prince.

Its a sad day for D&D fans everywhere. He sparked the evolution of roleplaying and gave birth to a unique form of entertainment, the impact of which will likely continue till the end of the earth. Few people truly make a mark on the world as he has, as he gave birth to and enitre sub culture.

Good bye Gary Gygax, you will be missed.

Good bye and thanks,

As we all know from our personal experiences Gary has given each of us the ability to see more clearly outside the box of the normal realm. What more could a person ask for than to see his dream rise and prosper through change, innovation, and a massive fan base support. One persons ability to lose himself in a realm of fiction and fantasy to become what ever he wants to be, to be anyone, anywhere, anytime, to experience feats and adventures that were never possible outside of his magic realm. That is a gift that will live on far beyond his years, and far beyond our own. I think that Gary’s impact will be felt equally by all those who share a dream, be it that of some video game or of the more direct impact on those who play and know D&D. We will all miss the man who made dragons come to life, heroes come save a village for no reward, and even the gods them self walk the planes with their followers, things we take for granted everyday.

You will be missed but never forgotten.
May you only roll 20’s,
Taylor

Yea I read that Slate article and thought, “WOW! Blame Gygax because you have had crappy DMs.” Followed closely by “Palladium did GURPS like 5 years before GURPS did.”

Oh well, anything for attention. Besides I guess every demographic has to have its elitist snobs, right? (Speaking of which, I think you left those out of your Population Demographics articles BP.smile

With good reason.  But I left the option of you adding them back in if you really want them.wink

Perhaps the only precept taught me by Grandfather Wills that I have honored all my adult life is that profanity and obscenity entitle people who don’t want unpleasant information to close their eyes and ears to you.

Does anyone else find it ironic that he died on 3-4?

Why suffer from insanity when you could enjoy every minute of it?

Yes, it was certainly strange, yet oddly appropriate that Gary Gygax should pass away on GM’s Day
