im trying to make a lvl 2 muti classed druid and ranger for my friends adventure. Im confused as to whether you have to experience bars type things or just one, for example haveing 1000 xp for druid and 1000 xp for ranger or if its all compiled into one lump sum. If it is one lump sum I really have no other further questions, but if there are two different xp tallys then do if you where say first lvl couldnt you pick several class to start as because it doesnt take any xp to be lvl one? or does it cost say 1000 xp to get you started and another 1000 xp to get to second lvl on that class? well I hope this wasnt too hard to follow hope you guys can help and thanks for any help you give.

You have one experience track. A Druid 1/Ranger 1 requires the same amount of experience as a second level druid or a second level ranger.
I advise you to open the PHB and read the section about multi-classing.

I keep intending to start planing ahead but I keep putting it off.

I have looked in the PHB but it didnt explain it that much, I kinda figured it was one track though. Thanks man.

Could you tell us what edition are you playing?

Assuming it is 3.0 or 3.5, you just keep one total.
Think of it like this.

Your character level has really nothing to do with your class levels when dealing with xp.

You gain a level at 1000xp
Being 2nd level means that you can pick a new class or continue the one form the 1st level.

Every character level is like a slot that fits one level of some class.

The progression of character levels is only depending on xp accumulated and only the single total that you have. (not depending on class)

Example:
You start out as a fighter level 1.
You get to 2nd level when you earn 1000xp. (you only track one total of xp)
You can now pick up a second fighter level or any other (base) class level that you would like. Lets say it is rogue level 1.

Now your class levels are fighter 1 and rogue 1, but your character level is 2. You need to earn 2000xp more for character level 3.
